Moose Hunting: 3 Best States to Get Your Big Kills and What You Should Know
In the United States, the moose is considered one of the largest game animals. The population of this animal continues to grow, which means that hunting moose has become very popular among hunters. Whether you are interested in hunting for the meat or to show off to your friends that you killed the biggest bull, you need to go where you have the best chance at a successful kill. Here are three states where you can hunt for moose successfully:
- Alaska
If you have always wanted to get a trophy moose, then Alaska is where you need to go. The moose in this state can reach up to 1800 pounds and have a spread of about 65 inches. A lot of the land in Alaska is owned by the federal government or the state, so you will likely need to hunt on public land. The terrain that you will encounter on your hunt will be rough and often in higher elevations, especially during the fall hunting season. You will need to move though heavily forested areas, climb hills and possibly even slog through muddy ground. Don't be surprised if you have to take a plane and then a vehicle or horse to your hunting ground, but it will be worth it when you end up with as much as 700 pounds of meat, right?
- Maine
If you aren't up for dishing out the cost of travel expenses or traveling the distance to Alaska to get that trophy moose, then Maine is your next best bet to get that good kill. This state's moose weigh in around 1000 pounds and have spreads between 38 and 50 inches, though some have said they have gotten some with 57 inches. You will need to obtain a permit, but the best region in Maine for moose hunting is the North Maine Woods. It is an excellent habitat for moose, yet it provides excellent visibility for hunters.
- Idaho
Idaho is yet another attractive state for moose hunting. This state is home to the Shiras subspecies, which weigh around 850 and 1100 pounds with spreads approximately 45 inches. While you can hunt for moose all over the state, the most populated area is close the Canadian border where you can also find some trophy-quality moose. The terrain that you will encounter as you hunt varies, from river valleys and high elevations. You can hunt on either private or public land, so check your permit to see where you are allowed to hunt, and never hunt on private land without permission.
