When you head out to hunt, you want to be comfortable. You will likely be in colder-than-usual temperatures, so you’ll need to layer your clothing. However, there is a method to layering your clothing that you’ll want to follow. Each layer needs to work with the other layers to remove moisture, trap heat and defend against outside elements. Here is a straightforward, basic approach to layering that any and all hunters would benefit from following:
- Base Layer – This is the first layer and it should consist of moisture-wicking properties. You’ll need to choose between lightweight, mid-weight and heavyweight layers, all of which are for different types of weather and activity. Usually, for hunting, heavyweight layers are recommended. The best materials include silk, polyester, polypropylene and merino wool.
- Mid Layer – This is the first layer of insulation. It doesn’t need to be too thin, but it doesn’t need to be too heavy either. It works to keep moisture away while trapping heat. A waterproof option should be considered. Nylon, merino wool and polyester are the best materials for this layer.
- Insulating Layer – This is your heaviest layer and is also for insulation. It is supposed to protect you from the cold temperatures and is usually an optional layer. It is typically worn in extremely cold conditions. This layer consists of fleece hoodies, wool sweaters and fleece jackets. Popular materials for this layer include pile fleece, down and wool.
- Outer Shell – This is the outer-most layer that protects you from the various elements that Mother Nature may throw at you. It should be breathable, yet windproof and waterproof. Your primary decision with this layer is going to be a soft shell or hard shell. Soft shells will probably be most appropriate for active hunts, but hard shells will provide better protection for still-hunting.
